Functional Skills Maths
Showcase Training delivers Functional Skills Maths at Level 1 and Level 2, accredited by Highfield Qualifications, as part of the apprenticeship programme. The delivery period is over 8 months, allowing learners sufficient time to build knowledge, practise skills, and prepare for assessment.
The qualification assesses learners’ ability to represent, analyse and interpret mathematical information in real-life contexts, covering numbers, geometry and statistics.
Learners must complete two mandatory written exams:
- Non-Calculator assessment
- Calculator assessment
Both exams must be passed to achieve the qualification. Assessments can be delivered on-screen or paper-based.
Reasonable Adjustments: Highfield Qualifications offer reasonable adjustments and/or special considerations for all Functional Skills assessments if applicable. For more information and the policies on this, please see the following link: https://www.highfieldqualifications.com/about-us/downloads

How to Pass Functional Skills Maths – Quick Tips
Spot key words and work step by step
Action words tell you what maths to use. Underline clues like increase, discount, total, round, share, and scale. Questions are usually in the correct order. Treat them like a recipe and solve each line in turn.
Use marks wisely
• Always attempt every question.
• Show your method, even if you are unsure.
• More marks usually mean more steps.
Key skills to practise
• Fractions, decimals, and percentages
• Ratio and proportion
• Averages and range
• Area, perimeter, and volume
• Metric conversions
• Reading tables, charts, and frequency tables
Formulas to remember
• Rectangle area = length × width
• Triangle area = ½ × base × height
• Circle area = πr²
• Circle circumference = 2πr
• Cuboid volume = length × width × height
• Perimeter = add all sides
Calculator vs non-calculator
• Non-calculator: know times tables and common conversions; estimate first.
• Calculator: write calculations clearly, use brackets, and state rounding.
Exam day tips
• Always write units.
• Only round if asked.
• Check your answer makes sense.
• Re-read the final question carefully.
