Dyslexia Support

What is Dyslexia?

“yslexia is a learning difficulty that impacts a learner’s abilities in reading, writing, and spelling. However, it does not affect a learner’s intelligence. Dyslexia is a condition that can impact a person throughout their life; however, with support, individuals can still be successful in work and school.

Symptoms of dyslexia can include:

  • Reading difficulties: Struggling with reading fluency, decoding words, and recognising familiar words.
  • Spelling issues: Difficulty with spelling words correctly, even simple ones.
  • Writing challenges: Problems organising thoughts on paper and with handwriting.
  • Slow reading and writing speed: Taking longer than usual to read or write.
  • Difficulty with time management: Trouble estimating time or staying organised.
  • Speech and language difficulties: Problems with pronouncing words or understanding complex instructions.
  • Memory issues: Struggling to remember names, sequences, or lists of information.

Getting a Diagnosis

A dyslexia diagnosis starts with speaking to a teacher, SENDCO or a GP to rule out other issues. Schools may offer screenings, but a formal diagnosis requires an educational psychologist (EP) or specialist assessor, usually through a private assessment. Online screening tests exist but aren’t diagnostic. Once diagnosed, you can recieve extra support such as extra exam time, assistive technology, or learning strategies to help manage dyslexia effectively.
