Updated Guidance on Screen Use in Early Years

The updated Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) states that providers must have regard to government guidance on children’s screen use in early years settings. Evidence shows that screens can have a big impact on children and their development in the early years and this guidance helps limit children’s screen use in settings and ensure it supports children’s learning and development.

Screen Time Recommendations

Under 2 years: Avoid screen use, except in exceptional circumstances (e.g. video calls with parents/carers).

2–5 years: Limit screen time to no more than 1 hour per day, with less being preferable.

Suitable Content

In early years settings, screens should only be used when they have a clear educational purpose and should always involve adult interaction.

Content should be:

  • Age appropriate and checked before use.
  • Slow-paced and simple.
  • Free from adverts, autoplay and unsuitable content.

Why is it important to limit screen use?

Excessive screen time may be associated with:

  • Reduced language development and vocabulary.
  • Delayed cognitive and behavioural development.
  • Reduced attention span and executive functioning.
  • Less time for sleep, active play, social interaction and responsive adult engagement.

When to Avoid Screens

Never use screens to manage behaviour, occupy children or replace play, storytelling, outdoor activities and face-to-face interaction. Avoid using screens during mealtimes and before sleep.

SEND and Communication Needs

Some children may benefit from screen-based assistive technology to support communication and inclusion. Use should be based on individual needs.
