Promoting Equality and Diversity in Early Years
Promoting an inclusive environment is a vital aspect of early years education. Every child has the right to feel a sense of belonging and early years settings should provide a safe and welcoming environment for all children to learn and develop. Regardless of background, race, sex or circumstances, every child should be given equal opportunities to thrive. In this article, we will be sharing our tips on how to promote equality and diversity in Early Years settings:
Create a Welcoming and Inclusive Environment
Creating an inclusive environment is all about celebrating differences and valuing everyone’s uniqueness. It is important that every child is treated respectfully and equally regardless of their background. Early years professionals should use inclusive language to create a welcoming and friendly environment for all children and avoid making assumptions based on unfair stereotypes.
Celebrate Diversity and Different Faiths/Beliefs
Celebrate different festivals and cultural traditions by organising activities and events about these. For example, celebrating Lunar New Year, Diwali and Eid-al-Fitr. Through this, children can learn about different cultures, promoting positive messages about equality and diversity. A good way to stay on top of cultural events is to keep a wall calendar in the staff room.
Provide Support to Children with Additional Needs
Practitioners should implement the necessary support for children with additional needs. For example, using clear, simple instructions, visual aids, and sensory-friendly materials to make learning accessible.
Provide Support to Children with EAL
Language differences should not be a barrier to equality and inclusivity. Engage with parents and caregivers to understand the child’s background and needs. Use simple language, visual aids, and interactive activities to help them grasp new concepts. Additionally, provide resources in their home language in order to encourage them to feel more at home.
Complete Equality and Diversity Training
All early years professionals should receive equality and diversity training to help them understand the needs and experiences of children from different backgrounds. This training should include learning about cultural differences, language barriers, and how to support children with additional needs. Every setting should also have an equality and diversity policy which should be reviewed regularly.
What Does the EYFS Say?
The EYFS framework highlights that introducing children to a variety of stories, non-fiction texts, rhymes, and poems can deepen their understanding of our diverse world. This approach not only broadens their knowledge but also enhances their vocabulary and comprehension skills across various areas.
