Working in early years education is an incredibly rewarding and meaningful role. However, it is not for everyone. Working with children requires patience and creativity, as well as a passion for supporting children’s development. If you are considering a career in early years, here are five signs that it might be right for you:
1. You Thrive in Active, Hands-On Environments
Early years settings are busy, noisy and full of surprises. The role requires you to be on your feet and getting stuck in with activities such as messy art and outdoor play. It is important that you thrive off the chaos! If you are energetic and love being active, early years is a great option.
2. You Have a Natural Affinity with Children
Do you find that children naturally gravitate towards you? Working with children requires a deep understanding of their needs, emotions and ways of learning. It is important to be able to connect with young children, as well as build trust and rapport. From this, children can feel safe and confident to be able to explore the world around them.
3. You Are Patient and Flexible
One of the most crucial skills when working with children is patience. In early childhood settings, children are still learning to communicate, regulate their feelings and respond appropriately in various circumstances. You also need to be able to remain calm in challenging situations and approach issues with sensitivity. Things don’t always go to plan, so it is important to be able to think on your feet and adapt to changes.
4. You Are Creative
Creativity is an important skill when working in early years. You will need to be able to come up with fun and exciting activities that stimulate the children’s interest. Creativity also comes in to play when creating resources, putting up displays and setting up the room.
5. You’re Passionate About Making a Difference
At its core, early years education is about shaping lives. Every day, you will support children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development, laying the foundation for their future learning and wellbeing. If you feel energised by the idea of having a positive, lasting impact on young children, this career path can be incredibly fulfilling.
Early years education isn’t just a job, it’s a vocation. It requires dedication, empathy, and a love of learning (both for yourself and for the children in your care). If these five signs resonate with you, you might just have what it takes to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young learners.
