Apprenticeship Wage to Increase to £8 an Hour

From April 2026, the apprentice wage will increase to £8.00 per hour. This is a 6% rise from the current minimum wage of £7.55. This update from the government intends to make apprenticeships a more financially viable and attractive path into skilled employment. The rise in pay is welcome news for anyone hoping to earn while they learn through an apprenticeship.

It is important to note that the apprenticeship wage applies to those aged 16-17 years old, as well as those who are in the first year of their apprenticeship. After this, apprentices are paid according to their age.

What This Means for Learners

If you are considering an apprenticeship, this wage increase makes the decision even more appealing. You will not only gain hands-on experience and valuable skills but also earn a fairer wage while doing so. It is a step toward financial independence and career growth, making apprenticeships a competitive alternative to other forms of post-school employment or study.

What This Means for Employers

Employers also stand to benefit. Higher wages can help attract and retain motivated apprentices, ensuring businesses have access to a skilled workforce. Investing in apprentices is an investment in the future of the company, and this wage increase reinforces the value of apprenticeship programmes.

Why Choose an Apprenticeship?

Real-world experience: Apprenticeships provide hands-on and direct experience in a specific role, allowing individuals to gain practical skills and knowledge. An apprentice is entitled to the same benefits as other employees, including holiday pay, sick pay and other staff benefits.

Career preparation: If you have no prior experience, apprenticeships provide a direct pathway to a career in that field. You will gain the knowledge and skills specific to a particular role. Apprenticeships are industry-recognised certifications or qualifications, making it easier for apprentices to advance in their careers.

Earning while learning: As an apprentice, you will be entitled to the National Apprenticeship Wage. Furthermore, apprentices aged 19 and over and not in their first year of an apprenticeship are entitled to National Minimum Wage for their age group. This means that apprentices get the best of both worlds as they are able to earn a salary whilst completing a qualification at the same time!

No student debt: Unlike other education paths, apprentices do not have to pay any cost to their programme, and they are not required to take out student loans.

Personalised learning: Apprentices will be supported by a knowledge and experienced tutor for the duration of the programme. This means that apprentices can receive personalised training and support and receive individualised feedback.

Job opportunities: Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to build transferrable skills such as communication, team-work and problem solving, all of which will contribute towards your employability. Additionally, apprenticeships provide the opportunity to network and build connections, which can be valuable for finding future job opportunities.
