Have you recently finished your GCSE’s and are wondering about your next steps?
Planning for your future can be tricky and you may be considering a range of different options. Suddenly you are thrown in to an adult world where you are told to make vital decisions which could have a major impact on your future and career. It is important to consider every option carefully and to think about your future goals. One route you may or may not have considered is an apprenticeship. In this blog, we will be discussing all things apprenticeships and why it may be a suitable option for you.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a training programme that allows you to work, earn a salary and gain valuable qualifications and experience. You can apply for an apprenticeship while still in school, but you must be 16 or older by the end of the summer holidays to begin the apprenticeship.
As an apprentice, most of your time will be spent in the job itself, but you’ll also get dedicated study time throughout the week to work towards your qualification. In England, it is a legal requirement for apprentices to spend 20% of their paid time “off-the-job.” This includes essential training to help them acquire the skills necessary to complete their apprenticeship.
During an apprenticeship, you will work under the guidance of a tutor and learn the behaviours, knowledge and skills needed related to the chosen sector. Apprenticeships come in varying levels, and this could vary from equivalent to GCSEs to a master’s degree. Additionally, each level apprenticeship will have different entry requirements and the duration typically ranges from 12-24 months.
At the end of the apprenticeship, apprentices typically must pass a final exam or assessment known as the End Point Assessment (EPA) to prove their competence in the field. Upon successful completion of the programme, apprentices receive a nationally recognised qualification which can improve their career opportunities and validate their skills.
Choosing an apprenticeship after school can be a great option for several reasons:
Real-world experience: Apprenticeships provide hands-on and direct experience in a specific role, allowing individuals to gain practical skills and knowledge. An apprentice is entitled to the same benefits as other employees, including holiday pay, sick pay and other staff benefits.
Career preparation: If you have no prior experience, apprenticeships provide a direct pathway to a career in that field. You will gain the knowledge and skills specific to a particular role. Apprenticeships are industry-recognised certifications or qualifications, making it easier for apprentices to advance in their careers.
Earning while learning: As an apprentice, you will be entitled to the National Apprenticeship Wage. Furthermore, apprentices aged 19 and over and not in their first year of an apprenticeship are entitled to National Minimum Wage for their age group. This means that apprentices get the best of both worlds as they are able to earn a salary whilst completing a qualification at the same time!
No student debt: Unlike other education paths, apprentices do not have to pay any cost to their programme, and they are not required to take out student loans.
Personalised learning: Apprentices will be supported by a knowledge and experienced tutor for the duration of the programme. This means that apprentices can receive personalised training and support and receive individualised feedback.
Job opportunities: Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to build transferrable skills such as communication, team-work and problem solving, all of which will contribute towards your employability. Additionally, apprenticeships provide the opportunity to network and build connections, which can be valuable for finding future job opportunities.
Considering an apprenticeship after school offers numerous benefits that can significantly enhance your career prospects and personal growth. Apprenticeships provide hands-on experience in your chosen field, allowing you to develop practical skills and gain industry-specific knowledge that is often not covered in traditional academic settings. This real-world experience can make you more competitive in the job market, as employers highly value candidates who have proven their capabilities through practical work.
